Hi! My name is Mariana, but you can call me by Rei or Rei Suzuki. I'm a cosplayer since 2005, originally born in Brazil, but currently living in the Netherlands. I love videogames, drawing and specially making cosplays.

What does "Japan" mean to you?

The begining of everything that led me to my favorite hobbies, but also a wonderful country which I felt in love with since my first visit in 2015.

Self-introduction

I started cosplaying in 2008 at my very first anime convention. I bought my cosplays online and started making costumes myself in 2012. Since 2013 I am part of a 6 member cosplay group called PRISM. Because of this group I started competing. Over the years I participated more cosplay competitions and watched competitions to learn and get inspiration. I love the storytelling in a cosplay performance. The best feeling is when you finished your performance and the audience is laughing, clapping and cheering for you. It makes me incredibly happy to perform something people like and enjoy.
I like cosplay so much because not only I can express my love and affection for a certain series and character, but I also gain skills. When I started cosplaying, I had no sewing skills. There wasn't anyone close who could teach me. Over the years I taught myself by just doing it (trial and error) and searching for tutorials online. I learned about different kinds of fabrics, sewing techniques, attachments, making cosplay props, different kinds of materials like foam, thermoplastics, resin casts, different kinds of primers and paint. I learned to do my make up in different ways, from hiding eyebrows to using fake eyelashes, where to buy colored contacts, wigs and how to style them. I learned about photography - how to pose, angles, composition, lighting. I also met cosplayers whom I look up to, from local events / the Netherlands but also worldwide. I met creators of series in cosplay - like Hideo Baba when in my Presea Combatir cosplay and Barbera Dunkelman in my Yang Xiao Long cosplay. Besides all this, I also met many great friends from different countries, be it cosplayer, photographer or just a person who likes manga/anime/games/Japanese culture in general. Cosplay has given me so much more than I could imagine. It went from "Oh, I like this series and cosplay looks fun to do" to "cosplay has connected me with so many people from around the world and helped me develop both crafting and social skills". It has become an important part of my life.

Favorite manga and Japanese anime

Full Metal Alchemist, Spirited Away

What does "Japan" mean to you?

I grew up with anime on TV without knowing it was anime. I was mostly into the shounen anime like Pokemon, Digimon, Beyblade, Dragon Ball Z, Rockman.exe, Medabots, YuGi-Oh but I also liked shoujo anime like SailorMoon. When I could watch anime on the internet, I learnt it came from Japan. Through the years I learned about the Japanese culture as well. I listened to mostly J-pop and J-rock for a while. I also wanted to study there or do an internship there but it never happened.

This trip in August 2019 will be my third time in Japan. The other two times I was there for vacation (also in August), but this time it will be for the purpose of cosplay, the World Cosplay Summit. I couldn't have wished for a better opportunity! This is a dream coming true. Japan is a country I love to visit for vacation as I love both the traditional and pop culture, the fashion and make up stores, the beautiful landscapes and nature, and the respect and politeness maintained in the society and of course, the food! I am looking forward to meet cosplayers from all around the world who are passionate about costume making and acting, all the staff/crew people who work hard to make this event possible, and all the people who love to see cosplay.
